Counter- is an intimate, full sensory dining experience featuring themed tasting menus created by Executive Chef and Founder Sam Hart (they/them), a 2023 James Beard Awards Finalist for Best Chef: Southeast. Employee-owned and operated with a shared mission to change the industry, Counter- is designed to evoke emotion throughout the progressive dining experience, fully immersing guests by utilizing sound, taste, and art as a vehicle for sense-based storylines such as music, modern art, and mental health. The space is purposefully designed to mimic a blank canvas that can easily be transformed to fit the rotating menus, tableware, and art that accompany each quarterly theme. Hart aspires for Counter- to be an incubator for rising star chefs, providing them with a place for empowerment and guidance to open their own concepts in Charlotte. Looking to impact their hyper-local community, Counter- has partnered with several Charlotte-based 501(c)(3) partners, to which a portion of proceeds are donated each year.
