The Circular Process Engineering (CPE) Lab at Dalhousie University, led by Dr. Khaled Benis, advances research in sustainable process engineering with a focus on circular solutions. At the CEP lab, we research, design and optimize processes to convert biomass and waste into value-added products that support clean energy, safe water, and environmental sustainability. Our work spans three core areas: • Thermal conversion of waste into biochar, pyro-gas, and bio-oil using conventional and microwave-assisted pyrolysis • Water and wastewater treatment using materials derived from waste, targeting contaminants like PFAS • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) to evaluate the real-world impact of our technologies We apply advanced methods—such as adsorption, electrosorption, and oxidation processes—to develop practical, scalable, and low-impact solutions.
