Our fun basketball oriented SEL whole school model teaches body awareness/skills for mental health. SEL focuses on mindfulness but nervous sys responses (flight/fight) come before mindfulness. We bridge that learning in P.E. by growing the mind-body connection and body based coping strategies. Our educators yoga program incorporates this body based curriculum into trauma informed yoga which focuses on release of stress in the body. These therapeutic supports are not available. By growing a child's understanding of their body and how emotions play into their experience they will have the awareness to seek help earlier than ever. In addition, they will have knowledgeable support for peers during these complex moments. Our Basketball based SEL curriculum includes education on: • How aggression shows up in your hands and 2 ways to use your hands to release stress • The 2 main parts to strong breathing (using skills taught to asthma sufferers on how to get out of an asthma attack) • What is emotional eating (how to identify, why it happens and deal with it) • The best movements to release stress from the body, increase body awareness and improve balance/mobility • How emotions show up in the body and coping activities that match them And more. Our educators’ Yoga-based SEL program includes the same education as above interwoven through instruction of somatics-based movements. These movements work on releasing pent up stress and tension in the body while increasing the brain body connection. The result is a enhanced relationship between how the body is reacting to emotional triggers and practical tools to meet those needs as they arrive. We also offer educators follow up sessions through one-on-one video sessions with our licensed practitioners, review of their personal physical symptoms of stress and prescribe matching movements to meet those body parts' needs.
