CSUS Mechanical Engineering Department

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at California State University, Sacramento was established in 1958 and provided the first Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Science (MS) Mechanical Engineering programs in the Sacramento region. These initiatives aimed to address the growing demand for engineers in Sacramento and Northern California while offering advanced educational opportunities to engineers in local industry and state agencies. The BS program has consistently ranked among the top 25 nationally recognized programs by US News & World Report for several years. Currently, the department boasts a robust enrollment of approximately 850 BS and 75 MS students, with an annual graduation rate of about 150 BSMEs and 10 MSMEs. The programs benefit from strong support from the professional community. The BSME program emphasizes a comprehensive theoretical foundation coupled with practical application through laboratory experiences and co-curricular opportunities. The MSME program is thesis based with each candidate completing a rigorous coursework component as well as a research project. In the BS program, students undertake coursework covering design, thermal-fluids, manufacturing, materials properties and selection, controls, and computer applications. These courses are meticulously designed to impart a solid grounding in engineering science, analytical techniques, and design methodologies, integrating both traditional engineering approaches and contemporary technologies. Graduates are well-equipped to pursue licensure as Professional Engineers. The faculty and staff are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where aspiring Mechanical Engineers receive the necessary support and resources for success.
