Established in 1951, the Institute of Jute Technology was initially an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta, created in partnership with the Indian Jute Mills Association. Situated on a land from the Tarak Nath Palit Trust Prangan within the Ballygunge Campus, the institute was managed by a Governing Council chaired by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, who served as the ex-officio President.
Following West Bengal Government Order No. 267/1(1)/EH/1U(C)-11-10 dated May 25, 2011, and Calcutta University Syndicate Notification No. CSR/32/11 dated June 27, 2011, the Institute of Jute Technology was transitioned into a Post Graduate Technology Department of the University of Calcutta, effective from July 1, 2011.
