About Cambridge University Locomotive Engineers' Society (CULES)

At CULES (Cambridge University Locomotive Engineering Society), we bring together Engineering Tripos students at the University of Cambridge with a shared passion for railway engineering. Our mission is to design and build a 10 1/4” gauge locomotive to compete in the @IMechE Railway Challenge, an annual test of innovation and technical skills at the Stapleford Miniature Railway. As an extra-curricular team, we apply our engineering knowledge in a practical setting, gaining hands-on experience in locomotive design, manufacturing, and problem-solving. In 2025, we are entering the Entry Level competition as a stepping stone towards manufacturing our locomotive and competing in the track-based challenges in 2026.
