Will cultured meat be the next food revolution?
In theory, cultured meat has the potential to tackle some of the most challenging global problems. At the moment, more than 55 billion animals are slaughtered every year. Meat without killing could bring an end to this suffering. Producing meat in a lab from real animal cells, could also be a way to save water, free up vast tracts of land, and drastically cut planet-warming emissions. Because today, the meat and dairy industry is responsible for about 15 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Many people agree today that our global problems require drastic solutions.
But there are no guarantees that "slaughter-free" meat will become a reality. There are huge technological, economic, emotional and regulatory hurdles to overcome before cultured meat reaches our plates. If it ever will.
Today, more than 100 start-ups worldwide are working on the development of cultured meat. They are backed in their ambition by investors who have pumped more than $3 billion into the industry. But will these investments ever pay off?
