CWRU Mock Trial is an undergraduate mock trial team at Case Western Reserve University.
Consisting of a student-run body, students work with attorney coaches and alumni to compete at invitational and qualifying tournaments hosted by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA)—a non-profit focusing on critical thinking and public speaking through intercollegiate mock trial tournaments nationwide—to ultimately compete at the National Championship Tournament in the spring.
With an alternating fictional civil and criminal case every year, students work with statutes, case law, witnesses, and exhibits to develop case theories and craft strategies to present in competitions that simulate the judicial proceedings and structure of an actual trial. Using critical and strategic thinking, problem solving, and legal analysis skills, students enact courtroom roles of attorney and witnesses to portray and build both sides of a case, the Prosecution/Plaintiff and the Defense.
CWRU Mock Trial is a multifaceted educational organization that connects with dynamic and passionate students, alumni, and coaches of all backgrounds. Introducing lifelong, transferable, and valuable skills of leadership, research and organization, creativity, public speaking, teamwork, collaboration, improvisation, adaptability, and persuasive communication, mock trial cultivates a wide range of cognitive, communication, and personal skills, preparing participants for success in diverse academic and professional pursuits.
Competing at and hosting the AMTA 2024-2025 40th Annual National Championship Tournament and our annual Spartan Throwdown Tournament, CWRU Mock Trial is among the top 50 programs in the nation and continuously strives for excellence and to always be the legacy.
