About Cycle4Climate

The Cycle4Climate (C4C) project aims to implement and assess the effectiveness and feasibility of interventions to encourage people to switch from using cars to using bikes for transportation. The project is carried out in four cities: Espoo, Finland; Gävle, Sweden; Pärnu, Estonia; and Riga, Latvia. It will involve continuous traffic volume measurements and pre- and post-intervention travel surveys to estimate the impact of these interventions on reducing CO2 emissions. The project will produce three main outcomes: 1) implementation of interventions in the transportation areas, 2) estimates of travel-related CO2 emissions over time and the impact of the interventions on these emissions 3) an intervention toolbox based on cross-border knowledge exchange City officials, policymakers, and decision-makers in the Central Baltic region seek ways to reduce CO2 emissions by increasing the use of bicycles. Cycle4Climate addresses this by focusing on a combination of physical and social behavioural interventions in a structured and systematic manner. The resulting data from the four transportation areas will serve as evidence for the effectiveness of these interventions. This information is compiled into a toolbox, which can be adapted to different cities' needs, promoting the adoption of effective planning practices. Cycle4Climate, coordinated by the University of GĂ€vle, is co-funded by the EU Interreg Central Baltic Programme during 6/2024-11/2027. Project partners include Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, University of Tartu, Riga Technical University, City of Espoo, GĂ€vle Municipality, City of PĂ€rnu, and Riga City Council.
