About Dalhousie Science Scholars & Leaders Program

The Dalhousie Science Scholars and Leaders Program (DSSLP) is a co-curricular academic program that was established in 2022. The DSSLP works to empower a sense of belonging and community for students in the Faculty of Science who have been historically marginalized (BIPOC, 2SLGBTQ+, Neurodivergent, First-Generation & Low-Income Students) by guiding underrepresented BSc students through the unwritten rules & resources of university and teaching them the historical contexts and gatekeeping of academia & science. The DSSLP consists of: - Individualized advising and planning for success in science - Mentorship in the implicit rules and culture of science - First-year interest group (FIG0021): Science for Everyone [previously A toolkit for diverse STEM students] (Fall term) - (SCIE 2111): Becoming a Scientist I (Fall term, Pass/Fail) - (SCIE 2112): Becoming a scientist II (Winter term, Pass/Fail) - Student-centred Workshops - Connecting students with Undergraduate Research opportunities - An overall goal of harbouring a strong & supportive diverse community
