Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development

The Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development (DDNIRD) was established in 1970 and it's main objective is the performance of the fundamental and applied research for the scientific support of the management of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (DDBR) and other wetlands of national and international interest for the biological diversity conservation and sustainable use. Due to its expertise and contribution to the local, regional and national research and development programmes, DDNIRD has been nominated as: - Centre of Excellence for Deltas & Wetlands; - National Reference Centre for Land Cover and Fisheries; - Main Scientific Advisor of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development for the implementation of the NATURA 2000 Network in Romania; - Centre of Technological Information for the Danube Delta of the National Authority for Scientifically Research; The relevance of the DDNIRD research activities for the local/regional/national and international environment issues is sustained by the Danube Delta protection status and the international Conventions and Programmes adopted by Romania. DDNIRD’s current activities include inventorying of wild species and natural habitats, managing biodiversity-related data (data-bases), conducting environmental impact assessments, assessing natural resources, monitoring environmental factors and biological quality elements. At European level, DDNI is participating as partner of the consortia in projects financed under the EC Framework Programmes as well as in projects financed through other programmes and funds (PHARE, SOCRATES Programme, COST, LIFE).
