Designers Without Borders SA

We are Designers Without Border South Africa. We are based in Grabouw, a rural town in the Overberg District in South Africa’s Western Province. Our mission is to create peaceful, inclusive and equal communities through female and youth empowerment. We work to empower young people to become active local and global citizens. To inspire and encourage them to take part in designing a better future for themselves and others. We aim to do this by creating safe and inspiring platforms for youth and young women in particular. Platforms where they can discuss the challenges they face and the ideas that they have, and ultimately bring these ideas to life. We build their capacity and prepare them to take center stage as global, active citizens working for peace, diversity and change. During the Covid-19 pandemic we have taken on other projects along-side our youth development project. Food insecurity in Grabouw was highlighted and affected a large part of our population. Designers Without Borders became a natural choice to coordinate the food relief efforts considering all the legislative requirements we have in place and our broad networks established over the years. Coordinating 18 organisations and individuals from the Kleinbegin Timbers Centre where our offices are situated became a full-time effort since April 2020. We are working closely with the locally established Solidarity Fund and Theewaterskloof Municipality who are donating funds for the purchasing of goods that are used by the food relief entities to cook and distribute in the community. Currently more than 5900 people are being fed daily.
