In January 2013 while working in the field of offering Business Development and Training Opportunities for a Direct Selling Company I worked for I visited many of the outlying rural and township areas in different geographic regions of South Africa.
On these travel trips, I also visited schools on career days and found out that both schoolgirls were missing school, and mothers were challenged with not being able to afford sanitary pads for themselves and their daughters.
That was the first time I was told that many girls and women were either using socks, rags, or newspaper during their menstrual cycle – which made me realize that there is so much we take for granted.
With every interaction on a career day I met beautiful young women who shared their dreams and aspirations with me. They wanted to be doctors, lawyers, and engineers and some wanted to help people as social workers or get married and have children, they wanted to live in a nice house, with a good education and wanted to be happy like every other young South African woman.
Having my own business and sewing skills background allowed me to motivate and self-fund all the sewing projects to support the distribution of these washable pads in different geographic areas I was traveling to train entrepreneurs.
From here on it has become a rewarding and purposeful journey of inspiration for me to make a difference in the lives of these young women, unemployed skilled men and women who feel valued for earning an income to feed their families and appreciated for their contribution to my vision to empower the unemployed and creating a more sustainable solution to “Period Poverty” that has so much more opportunity of growth on all levels of this initiative.
I have from the onset of embarking on this initiative in 2013 personally visited every area where there has been a call out for developing a Sewing Skills Centre and have been consistently creating awareness around Period Poverty.
