Devotably is a social e-commerce platform founded on the belief that we should spend less on ourselves and more on the people we care about. We know we have our work cut out for us. Right now, Americans spend 46 times more on themselves than on gifts. Psychologists tell us that gift-giving makes us happier than making purchases for ourselves, so why don't we do more of it? Because giving a gift is hard. A great gift isn't a gift card or something on a wish list. A great gift should be a physical embodiment of the relationship between two people. Luckily, anthropologists tell us that gift-giving is fundamental to being human. From the archaeological record and existing hunter-gatherer societies, we know that gift-giving existed before barter or trade. Gift-giving is the original human commerce.
