As a country with hundreds of rivers running through its veins, it’s no wonder Bangladesh has ship building skills in its blood. Dockyard and Engineering Works ltd. (DEW) began their humble journey as ‘Narayanganj Dockyard Limited’, as the first ever of the Indian Sub-Continent, on 1926. And after an eventful journey of three different regimes including British Colonial, East Pakistan and finally independent Bangladesh, it has shunned its skills of shipbuilding for more than a century. Now under the expert hands of Bangladesh Navy from 2006, it has seen immense growth and success going forward.
Built over 21.78 acers of land area with a riverfront of 900 ft. It is capable to dock vessels up to 1500 ton (light weight) of 88.4m (290ft) length. The production capacity of the yard is 2070 tons steelworks per year. It has 27,220 sq. m. of open area and 3,000 sq. m. enclosed area for shipbuilding. 26% space is kept free for greenery to make it an environment friendly green industry.
DEW ltd. specialized in constructing modern ships & craft for military, govt. organizations and for private owners including Patrol Craft, Inshore patrol Boat, Fast patrol Boat, Gun Boat, Landing Craft Tanks, Tug, Oil Tanker, Passenger Ferry, Ro-Ro Ferry, Survey Vessel, Coaster, Composite High Speed Boat, Aluminum Speed Boat, Bay Crossing Barge, Self-propelled Cargo Berge, Pontoon etc. We also provide Refit and Repair, Engineering and Manufacturing support of ships, craft and machinery components.
The country's first warship was built at DEW Ltd, Narayanganj in 1972. In 2012, DEW built a first of its kind water jet powered Aluminum boat for Bangladesh Coast Guard.
