About DigNA Portfolio

Current digital data storage technologies face significant sustainability challenges due to high energy consumption and reliance on rare, sometimes toxic, materials. DNA-based storage offers a promising alternative, featuring much higher information density and the potential for millennia-long stability. While in vitro DNA archiving has demonstrated success, economic feasibility remains a barrier, especially for broader applications and diverse data types. Despite technical challenges, interest is growing among large corporations and governments, particularly in Europe, where opportunities for both academic and commercial innovation are strong. Guided by the European Innovation Council (EIC), the DigNA Portfolio aims to develop scalable and reliable approaches to using DNA as a data storage medium. Nine European research projects have been selected by EIC management to form the DigNA Portfolio: PEARL-DNA, DiDAX, HYPERION, MI-DNA DISC, DISCO, DURA-store, NEO, DNAMIC, and TextaDNA. Together, these projects are committed to collaboration, aiming to achieve shared outcomes that will drive meaningful progress in the DNA storage sector.
