Distributed Information Systems Company (DISC) is an IT consulting firm based in Dallas, Texas. Founded in the 1980s by Don Bishop, DISC continues to deliver quality solutions to valued clients. One of the oldest software consulting companies in the metroplex - celebrating 30 years in 2014 - DISC specializes in GIS, java, middleware, and database applications.
As a young engineer working for the General Electric Company in Massachusetts, Don began his career in the infancy of the modern computing age. At the time, the most advanced hardware system was an IBM 705 series, complete with 16K of wire-wound core memory, requiring the space comparable to a large meeting room, and at a cost of $1 million dollars. Don in his spare time at GE reviewed specifications from Professors Kemeny and Kentz who then defined the BASIC programming language for their GE Time Sharing System at Dartmouth. In his 25 years at GE, Don held key positions in a number of locations across the country, managing teams of engineers throughout his career. He retired as a Vice-President of Product Development.
After GE, Don went on to start Distributed Information System Company, DISC. Under his leadership and vision, the original DISC products were written in the Pascal programming language on computers running the CTOS operating system. While most at the time were still building mainframe applications, Don recognized the future of computing in smaller, 'desktop' machines. Then, there were no commercially available database management systems available on this micro-computer; those had to be architected from the ground-up, also written in Pascal. Don's experience and leadership has moved DISC on from the early days of distributed computing and time-sharing systems to the present, and today DISC delivers fast, reliable, scalable, and lightweight products using advanced, cutting-edge technology.
