About Diversity in Technology DTU
'Wicked problems', such as climate change, poverty and inequality, are global challenges with a broad effect on societies. They cannot be tackled by one solution only and they require novel ways of thinking. United Nations propose that innovative technology is key to climate action. Yet it is paradoxical that the technology field lacks the social diversity that is imagined to lead to diversified and innovative thinking. The Diversity in Technology research group explores how diversity in teams and organizations influences their ability to create social innovation ; which structural barriers exist within the technology field, and how actors within this field might work to change established structures to enable a greater use of diverse talent. This research project focus on two key areas of the technology field in Denmark: education and the start-up environment. By using ethnographic and qualitative methods, the project explores in detail the ideas, situations, and events that manifest the mobilization, debate, and contention for the value of increased diversity. The project will provide an enhanced understanding of the complex mechanisms at play, while also providing insights into how the Danish technology field may become more diverse and equipped to tackle 'wicked problems' in the years to come. The research project is anchored at DTU Engineering Technology, and it is funded by a Carlsberg Foundation, Semper Ardens Accelerate grant.
