The charity was originally set up in 2005 by supporters of Hibernian FC following a European football match in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine, with an original remit to provide Ukrainian orphans with days out, memories and experiences.
When the full-scale invasion of Ukraine started in Feb 2022, the charity volunteers travelled into Ukraine from Edinburgh with the plan to transport more than 50 orphans to safety by bus. They drove them across the border into Poland, then by aircraft to London, before arriving in Edinburgh, with visas and permission enabled through a multi-lateral agreement between the governments of Ukraine, Poland and the UK.
The orphan 'families' have since been resident in Scotland, UK where the charity has supported them with what they need; accommodation, schooling, healthcare, day trips and much more.
Overall, Dnipro Kids has cared for orphaned children in Ukraine for almost 20 years, and we are continuing our work both with evacuated children we helped bring to safety in Scotland, and with those who remain in the Ukraine.
