When Sarah Warford began DogRunnin in 2013, there were very few opportunities in the Atlantic region for harness dog or sled dog sport activities. Sarah Peel joined DogRunnin in 2016 and it was obvious from the beginning, this was meant to be.
Together, through intentionally leading clinics around the maritime provinces, we have laid the foundation for not only the regional sports oversight organization in the maritimes, the Maritime Association of Harness Dog Sports (MAHDS), but also provided leadership and mentoring to each club within the organization as well as the development of the regional race circuit.
With a desire to build a sustainable sport scene, we have been intentional about “working ourselves out of a job” through mentoring and providing opportunities for others to grow and step into leadership positions within all levels of the sport.
Today, both MAHDS and each club started by “the Sarahs'' functions without our direct leadership as those we have mentored have risen to the opportunities presented and now lead those clubs with the same focus on sport-building, mentorship and community we did.
This intentional passing of the baton has allowed us to strategically focus our efforts on where we can best support the evolution of harness dog sports in Canada. With a philosophy of “watch one, do one, teach one” guiding how we operate together and mentor others, clubs began under our leadership and now mentor new smaller clubs.
Athletes we have coached give intro sessions and help initiate and develop others in the sport. Athletes we mentor often travel with us to bigger races out of the region. Having coached teams to multiple podium finishes at National Championships, we are excited to be once again sending those we mentor to national, continental and world championships this coming year.
