But of course, when Richard Nelson Bolles wrote his infamous book that became the ultimate creed for job-hunters and career-changers since 1970, the question was not meant to be literal. It was meant to be a cheeky response to address the increased number of people “jumping out” of organizations, dissatisfied by their turbulent corporate journeys that left their futures up in the air. The parachute, therefore, became symbolic of temporary salvation while hoping to land on stable ground.
