Kathiravelu Nythiananda Devananda, widely recognized as Douglas Devananda, is a prominent Sri Lankan Tamil politician who currently serves as a Cabinet Minister. He is also the leader of the Eelam People's Democratic Party. Mr. Devananda has a complex political history, having previously been involved in Sri Lankan Tamil militant activities with the aim of establishing an independent Tamil Eelam. However, he later transitioned to a pro-government paramilitary leadership role and became an active figure in politics.
Notably, he has been a vocal critic of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (Tamil Tigers), a rebel group. Devananda has faced numerous assassination attempts by the Tamil Tigers due to his strong opposition to their activities.
Furthermore, he is a proclaimed offender in India and is wanted on multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and kidnapping. On November 22, 2019, he was sworn in as the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
