DIHI catalyzes transformative health and healthcare innovations by implementing real-world, high-impact innovations, developing leaders, and cultivating an entrepreneurial community. Our goal is to serve as a facilitative innovation platform to improve clinical outcomes, cost, access, provider well-being, and population health improvement.
We collaborate closely with the Duke clinical enterprise. We innovate to address, solve, or reinvent pressing challenges in health care, aiming for sustainable, valuable differentiation for our patients and community. As a Duke Health 'Living Lab,' we pioneer, evaluate, integrate, and scale care models across the continuum.
DIHI sources, funds, and executes innovation projects through two primary methods: (1) an annual RFA for which Duke Health leadership determines priorities and (2) a shark-tank-style Innovation Jam. The DIHI team, faculty, care providers, and administrators collaborate to refine the chosen projects before integrating the projects into health care.
We support transformative hands-on education for students, working closely with faculty mentors. We form strategic partnerships across academia, medicine, government, and industry to promote novel approaches (e.g., new care or business models, digital health, AI, machine learning, algorithms, and software development), addressing, translating, and scaling salient healthcare challenges in and out of Duke.
Since 2013, we have implemented 65+ solutions, launched 10+ companies, and created fundamental platforms for integrating novel business and data science approaches into routine clinical care. We have successfully licensed our technologies to catalyze innovation uptake to improve patient outcomes beyond Duke.
