Das european centre for creative economy (ecce) hat seinen Ursprung in der Kulturhauptstadt RUHR.2010. Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft umfasst elf kreative und künstlerische Branchen: von Kunst über Musik, Literatur, Film, Medien, Design, Architektur bis zur Games-Entwicklung. Im Ruhrgebiet steht die Kreativwirtschaft für ca. 86.000 Erwerbstätige und über 10.000 Betriebe – sie ist aber nicht nur Wirtschaftsfaktor, sondern berührt Kultur, Stadtentwicklung und Bildung gleichermaßen.
Um den Kreativ- und Zukunftsstandort Ruhrgebiet zu stärken und diesen überregional und europaweit sichtbar zu machen, führt ecce landesgeförderte Förderprogramme (Individuelle KünstlerInnenförderung, Kreativ.Quartiere Ruhr, #heimatruhr) durch und veranstaltet Workshop-, Netzwerk- und Konferenzformate (z.B. Creative Industries Dialog, N.I.C.E. Award und Kreativcampus.Ruhr).
