About EastBio DTP
As one of the largest doctoral training partnerships in the UK, the East of Scotland Biosciences consortium unites globally recognised educational institutions, industry and research organisations. We deliver unparalleled research and professional training to emerging scientists, fostering the continued development of the bioscience industry, and invigorating the broader economy across Scotland and the UK. Lead by The University of Edinburgh, our partnership includes the University of St Andrews, the University of Dundee, Stirling University, the University of Aberdeen, SRUC, the James Hutton Institute, Moredun Research Institute, SULSA, IBioIC and Cool Farm Alliance. With over a decade of investment from UKRI BBSRC, our partnership, now in its third iteration, continues to flourish and welcomes 60-64 new students each year. Our 4-year EastBio PhD programme offers students the opportunity to become part of a dynamic research community, learning from internationally renowned scientists in state-of-the-art facilities and contribute to pioneering discoveries. Each student receives full tuition fee cover, an annual UKRI stipend and generous research grant. We deliver training and projects across all BBSRC thematic areas, outlined in the UKRI BBSRC strategic plan : Understanding the Rules of Life Bioscience for Sustainable Agriculture and Food – Crops and Soil Bioscience for Sustainable Agriculture and Food – Terrestrial and Aquatic Animals (encompassing Livestock, Production Biology and Health and Aquaculture) Bioscience for renewable resources and Clean Growth Bioscience for an integrated understanding of Health Our vision is to inspire and empower a diverse cohort of scientists to spearhead bioscience research, equipping them with the tools to address pivotal issues in our society and strengthen the broader UK economy.
