Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre (EBSOC)

EBSOC is at the centre of the Roslin Institute’s Public Engagement with Research Programme, which delivers its Public Engagement Strategy (https://vet.ed.ac.uk/the-roslin-institute/engagement/public-engagement/pe) via a programme of in-person, online and remote engagement activities linked to research at the Roslin Institute and supported by its scientists. The programme includes: • Curriculum-linked workshops for primary and secondary school classes • “ LabCamp” practical workshops for 16-18 year olds during school holidays • Workshops for international school students • Science events for community groups on and off campus • Live online “Meet a Roslin Scientist” workshops • Downloadable teaching resources and equipment loan boxes As well as activities based in EBSOC, we also take our workshops to schools and communities in rural areas of Scotland via our “Roslin on the Road” programme. A key part of our Public Engagement Strategy is to break down negative stereotypes about science and scientists, and to inspire and raise the aspirations of the young people we work with. All of our workshops are supported throughout by scientists from the Roslin Institute, the wider campus and University, and we prioritise time in each session for them to talk about their careers and answer questions about studying and working in science.
