ECO:DIGIT (Enabling Green COmputing and DIGItal Transformation) is a lighthouse project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. It addresses the challenge of making the environmental impact of digital technologies transparent and measurable.
The project focuses on developing an automated evaluation platform that analyzes the energy and resource consumption of software applications. It aims to create standardized indicators for aspects like electricity use, hardware demands, and material inputs throughout the hardware lifecycle. By simulating software in different deployment scenarios—such as cloud, mobile networks, edge, and devices—ECO:DIGIT enables fair comparison and optimization.
ECO:DIGIT brings together partners like adesso SE, Siemens, OSB Alliance, the Öko-Institut, and the German Informatics Society. Its goal is to drive sustainable software development and support Germany’s role in global green tech innovation.
