About ECOPEM

ECOPEM (dEvelopment of non-fluorinated COmponents for PEM fuel cells and water electrolysers) is a Horizon Europe project working to make hydrogen technologies cleaner, safer, and more cost-effective. Today’s proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells and electrolysers rely on perfluorinated (PFSA-based) materials, which are expensive and raise serious health and environmental concerns. ECOPEM is developing next-generation non-fluorinated, hydrocarbon-based membranes, reinforcements, and ionomers for use in membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). By combining cutting-edge materials science with life cycle assessment and technoeconomic analysis, ECOPEM aims to deliver high-performance, durable, and scalable alternatives that support Europe’s green hydrogen targets—particularly in heavy-duty transport and renewable hydrogen production.
