With collaboration at the epicentre of our approach, we are committed to curating diverse programmes in alliance with art professionals and practitioners worldwide. Our mission is to act as a bridge, building a global community dedicated to celebrating and advancing black and African art. We champion works by artists across all mediums and experience levels, placing a varied cohort of artists in conversation with each other in order to explore the breadth and complexity of experiences across the black and African worlds. 1897 seeks to explore common threads of heritage, memory, consciousness and identity. Through immersive, multi-sensory experiences, 1897 aims to explore the myriad possibilities of seeing and experiencing art. Our programming will span exhibitions, installations, and performances. With operations cut across 2 departments: the 1897 Gallery and the 1897 Advisory.
