Eisdell Moore Centre

The Eisdell Moore Centre is a national research centre for hearing and balance that is hosted by the University of Auckland. It was established in 2017 with a mission to reduce the impact of hearing and balance disability in Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific region through research, community education and the promotion of evidence based clinical services. We bring together researchers, clinicians, and communities across NZ to undertake multidisciplinary research aimed at developing prevention, treatment and interventions for hearing impairment and balance disorders. Naming the Centre after Sir Patrick Eisdell Moore acknowledges the roots of ear and hearing research in New Zealand and the eminent position he held as a pioneering New Zealander. Sir Patrick was an esteemed Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, a medical pioneer (particularly of cochlear implants), and served as a medical officer in the 28th Māori Battalion during World War II. He was the first person in the world to perform an eardrum transplant. Among many other endeavours, he established the Hearing House in Auckland and for many years traveled to the East Cape to run clinics for children with ear problems.
