About us El Refugio is an organization that improves the quality of life for all in Sanford and Lee County, North Carolina by building bridges between transitioning immigrants and established residents through sharing, learning, and serving our community together while respecting cultural identities. Our Mission To promote opportunities for interaction between cultures and encourage positive relationships based on sharing knowledge, hopes and experiences. To foster individual growth by identifying people’s talents and connecting to resources to develop them. Language and Educational Programs -English as a Second Language (ESL) (Partnership with Central Carolina Community College) -Spanish as Second Language (SSL) -Citizenship classes -Tutoring services Childcare and family enrichment activities: -Other Classes and Activities: -Healthy Cooking Classes -Computer Literacy Classes -DACA, TPS seminars, local guest speakers among others! Cross Cultural Engagement Engage the community through cross-cultural activities and outreach: -International Culture Night -Summer Fest -Festival Latino -Participation in the following: Sanford Block Party National Night Out Local and statewide events Resource Connections Provide orientation to newcomers and connect the community to agencies and resources in Lee County and surrounding communities. -Referrals to immigration legal aid information, housing, clothing, food, and other resources! -School readiness and family literacy activities -Immigration seminars, health clinics, citizenship events, special events -Easily available, pertinent and timely community information
