The pan-European Management of Biological toxin incidents through standaRdisAtion initiatives for Crisis response Enhancement (EMBRACE) is an ambitious Horizon Europe initiative addressing the urgent need for improved biotoxin crisis management. Over 36 months, EMBRACE aims to transform Europe’s response capabilities by advancing scientific knowledge, developing innovative technologies and fostering collaboration among key stakeholders.
The project seeks to close critical gaps in existing Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) frameworks by focusing on the unique challenges of biotoxin crises. It will conduct pioneering research into underexplored biotoxins, producing risk-based recommendations for personal protective equipment, novel decontaminants and field diagnostic tools. Efforts include in vitro studies to identify human biomarkers and the development of portable biosensors, enabling real-time support for first responders during incidents.
EMBRACE emphasises interoperability across borders and sectors through a comprehensive standardisation programme. By engaging with existing networks, it will establish a knowledge-sharing community and create a Biotoxin Task Force, a sustainable resource providing guidance for both the project and the wider community.
To ensure long-term impact, the project is developing a centralised biotoxin reference and stakeholder hub to facilitate knowledge exchange and support innovation dissemination. This platform will aid in the commercialisation of solutions and ensure EMBRACE’s contributions continue to enhance resilience and preparedness beyond the project’s duration.
Through scientific rigour, technological innovation and collaborative efforts, EMBRACE aims to strengthen Europe’s crisis response capacities and contribute to a safer, more resilient society.
