After more than nine years serving as general counsel for the Charleston County (S.C.) School District, I established Emerson Law, LLC to provide advocacy for students in the areas of school discipline, constitutional rights, and special education. Having worked as the only staff attorney for a school district of 50,000 students, in more than 80 schools or programs, I have the experience to assist students and schools with a wide variety of school and education-related issues. I am also a certified specialist in employment and labor law, advising and advocating for employees with challenges in the workplace related to compensation, discrimination, hostile work environments, discipline and termination of employment. I was involved in every area of the business of the school district, and worked particularly closely with administrators and with the department of human resources on every aspect of policy, recruiting, hiring, on-boarding, pay, promotion, discipline and termination.
