Ensovi, LLC was organized for the purpose of sponsoring pioneering research and development pertaining to artificial photosynthesis. Led by Co-founder and Feynman Prize recipient Carlo Montemagno, Ph.D. (dec), Ensovi's team developed proprietary synthetic organelles that efficiently regenerate the enzyme cofactors ATP and NAD(P)H in real time using light and water. The team further demonstrated a cell-free biomanufacturing system for producing sugars from CO2 using Calvin cycle enzymes immobilized in a synthetic foam based photo-bioreactor, an achievement which earned the 2010 Earth Award Grand Prize. In 2020, the company's intellectual property was transferred to Ensovi, Inc. for commercial development.
