The Environmental Humanities Network is a meeting place for the exchange of perspectives on current and emerging environmental knowledge practices in the humanities. It operates based on the premise that these practices are crucial to understanding, challenging and mitigating the ongoing climate and environmental emergencies and our responses to them.
While the natural sciences provide a good understanding of the causes and effects of climate and environmental emergencies on the planetary systems we live in, actions to mitigate these crises are so far deplorably insufficient.
Because these crises are part of complex social, political, economic, cultural, religious and linguistic systems, we need insights into these systems to understand and respond to these crises effectively and justly.
This means that climate and environmental crises need to be addressed in research and education in the humanities and social sciences as well as the natural sciences. In the wake of the establishment of a multitude of Environmental Humanities collectives in the Netherlands, Europe and the world, the EHN facilitates these practices at the University of Groningen.
Members
Our members are staff and students at the University of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences and Minerva Art Academy who work in such diverse fields as (eco)criticism and creative practices in literature, music and visual arts, ecolinguistics, environmental history, philosophy, political sciences, religious studies and theology, STS and more.
We have a mailing list you can subscribe to for updates and we meet monthly to discuss current issues in our education and research. We also organise an annual symposium.
