ESCOP, the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy, was founded in June 1989 as an umbrella organisation representing national associations of herbal medicine or phytotherapy across Europe.
ESCOP's aims are to
1) advance the scientific status of herbal medicinal products, and to assist with the harmonisation of their regulatory status at the European level, and
2) to promote the field of 'phytotherapy', defined as "the science-based medicinal use of plants and preparations derived from them, in the treatment, alleviation and / or prevention of disease or injury, according to recognised standards of quality, safety and efficacy.”
ESCOP Monographs provide comprehensive information in form of reviews of the therapeutic use of leading herbal medicinal products or herbal drug preparations based on scientific evidence and on leading expertise across Europe.
