The European Technology Platform on Sustainable Mineral Resources (ETP SMR) is an Association that brings together industry, academia, research institutes, national/regional associations and public entities involved in the Mineral Resources research and innovation sector, representing a wide range of different sectors along the value chain, from exploration to extraction, processing and recycling. ETP SMR is covering the entire range of mineral resources production in Europe. However, there is currently a distinct threat to the EU's security of supply of raw materials, and thus the production and provision of tailored products that require a reliable source of strategic and critical raw materials, due to an overreliance on imports.
The ETP SMR focuses its activities on creating sustainable resources potential, access to, and supply of, essential and critical raw materials through research, development and innovation actions, perfectly in line with the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials, based on three pillars: fostering sustainable supply within the EU, boosting resource efficiency and recycling, as well as international collaboration.
The ETP SMR was launched on March 2005 and officially recognised by the European Commission in 2008. In 2013 the ETP SMR was registered as an International non-profit Association and currently brings together 25 members from across Europe, including one international partner from South Africa. The ETP SMR members are major players from Industry, Research Institutes, Geological Surveys, Academia, and National and European Associations. They are united to address the future technological and societal challenges of the mineral sector, in order to jointly act towards a common vision of a more sustainable supply of raw materials for Europe.
