Dementia is recognised worldwide as a public health priority. The neuronal tau protein is associated with tauopathies, most notably Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Tauopathies are characterised by intraneuronal aggregation of tau protein into filaments causing neurofibrillary degeneration and synaptic dysfunction, which lead to dementia. Therefore, it is urgent to respond to increasing societal demand for better diagnostics for AD and related tauopathies, as well as disease-modifying treatments, due to the expected demographic changes elevating the mean age of the population in Europe and the facts that diagnosis remains conclusive only post-mortem. In addition to the ongoing efforts, a new generation of scientists needs to be trained to tackle this problem and to fill the unprecedented medical demand. To address this urgent need, we have gathered the first tau network of Europe : TAME (TAuimMunE). We have teamed-up to combine molecular and cellular neuroscience with computing, chemical and bio-engineering and their technology expertise between academia and industry. Thanks to our unique network of world-class scientists, we have established an interdisciplinary research and innovation training programme in order to overcome the current fragmentation of research and knowledge in tauopathies and to create a new generation of multidisciplinary researchers able to integrate scientific knowledge and accelerate personalised diagnosis and treatments in tauopathies. The primary objective of the TAME network is to train 9 high potential fellows to deliver the next generation of talented life scientists to society in a booming research area. The fellows will acquire fundamental scientific knowledge and technical skills through an interdisciplinary, international and intersectoral programme. The TAME project and the training programme it offers are funded under Horizon Europe’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme.
