Severe iodine deficiency, especially during pregnancy, can cause permanent brain damage and intellectual disability in infants, and it is the most common cause of thyroid disease. Even mild to moderate deficiency during pregnancy is related to neurocognitive impairment in children. Adequate iodine during early life is crucial to children’s ability to reach their full potential. The EUthyroid2 project seeks to raise awareness of the importance of iodine nutrition among adolescents and young women, the general population, medical professionals, the scientific community, and policymakers.
