As kids, the Bakare Sisters were lucky enough to grow up going to exhibitions on the weekends with their family. But as adults they found themselves constantly missing all the coolest exhibitions. As a self-taught artist with a degree in Mathematics, İlayda had the divinely-inspired idea to start Exhibits whilst on a web development bootcamp over lockdown. Following this by teaching herself how to code for mobile, she built the Exhibits app from scratch over 4 years while juggling two jobs. At one point she got stuck whilst coding—that’s where her sister Dilara, stepped in—fresh from her Aerospace Engineering Masters. With her help Exhibits really began to thrive!!! In just 3 months she taught herself graphic design and launched all their social media channels (which she still runs to this day). So, they joined forces as co-founders and have never looked back! Together, they’re bringing their sharp STEM skills to the cultural world, creating an app that’s as practical as it is beautiful. They marry technical expertise with creative vision, building the tool they wish existed years ago: an easy way to find cool exhibitions, museums and galleries in London, instead of missing them all the time! Modern life can often feel hectic and disconnected. Being in the present moment—even for a short time!—really helps life feel less stressful and more meaningful. This happens effortlessly when you’re engaging with topics you’re actually interested in, be it sport, history, art or science. The Bakare Sisters believe there’s an exhibition out there for everyone, it’s just a matter of finding it in time. And so, by using the platform they built, funded and launched from scratch, İlayda and Dilara are personally inviting people of all ages, backgrounds and interests to visit exhibitions so that as a community we can connect in real life, learn something new and hopefully have some fun along the way!
