About Extreme Robotics Lab
View ERL: https://matterport.com/discover/space/VyJWXu2Fkw3 The Birmingham Extreme Robotics Lab (ERL), is one of UK's largest, newest and best equipped robotics research facilities - with a 1,000m2 custom designed campus lab and a unique full scale KUKA heavy duty industrial robot test-bed off campus at Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre (BEIC) - this features multiple KR500 three tonne robot arms with half tonne payload capability and 0.05mm repeatability, industrial arm on 5metres actuated sliding rail, multi-axis heavy duty positioning table and other equipment. This is the only full scale industrial robot test-bed in UK that is fully housed within an academic research environment. We have particular strengths in autonomous grasping and advanced manipulator motion planning and control, driven by real-time computer vision, and Human-Robot and Human-AI interaction in which both human and AI collaborate in various ways to control remote robot arms and vehicles. However our world-class researchers have publications spanning numerous different areas of robotics, AI, machine learning, computer vision, control, and related areas of applied mathematics. Over the past decade, the ERL team have been prominent leaders of major national and international projects. These have included 2014-2028 €7million H2020 RoMaNS - promoted by the European Commission as their "flagship robotics project" and "European Commission Success Story"; and our leadership of the £42million UK National Centre for Nuclear Robotics - which published over 400 peer reviewed papers in its first 4 years, coupled with landmark deployments of advanced robotic systems on national and international nuclear sites. In 2017, collaborating with UK National Nuclear Lab, the ERL team delivered the world's first autonomous robot ever allowed inside a real radioactive environment - an AI controlled, computer vision guided, robot arm deploying a 6kilowatt laser to cut contaminated waste at Springfields Plant.
