fabula (noun) fab·u·la \ˈfabyələ\: story; usually: a traditional tale A project of Dr. Elizabeth Hunter, Fabula(b) theater and new media lab imagines, creates, and critically analyzes the impact of emergent technologies on the future of performance-based work. Lab projects are the practice-oriented complement to Dr. Hunter’s critical research, which interrogates liveness, presence, and interactivity in physical and digital immersive performance contexts. To design and build projects in Fabula(b), students from a range of majors—theater, animation, design, computer science, decision sciences, information systems, English, and political science—collaborate on teams with faculty and visiting professional artists. As they experiment with technologies like geolocated AR and LiDAR scanning, student researchers learn the valuable skills and roles prized by the new creative economy. Fabula(b) has been supported by an Arts & Sciences SPEED Grant, the Center for the Humanities, The George and Judy Marcus Fund for Excellence in the Liberal Arts, the School of Theatre & Dance, the Illinois Arts Council Agency, Microsoft, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in the Arts, and a Segal Design Fellowship.
