As of 2024, the primary cause of food scarcity in Nigeria is widespread insecurity, particularly due to banditry and insurgency, which has forced many farmers to abandon their land. This has drastically reduced agricultural output, making it difficult for citizens to access basic staples. A 2021 report by Ozkan and Fawole noted that over 75% of families in Southern Nigeria face severe food shortages, particularly in staples like rice, maize, and yams. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that more than 19.4 million Nigerians are experiencing acute food shortages. With the population projected to reach 400 million by 2050, food production must significantly increase to prevent a worsening crisis and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger). The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) reports that around 6 million Nigerian children under five are food insecure, suffering from malnutrition, stunted growth, and cognitive impairments. Interventions to increase food availability by 45% could offer relief to millions and help stabilize affected regions. To address the urgent issues of malnutrition in children and the growing economic inequality in Southern Nigeria, we are launching a women-led farming initiative called Farm Boxx. This initiative aims to empower unemployed women to grow high-quality and nutritious foods such as vegetables, pepper, okra, tomatoes, cassava, and yams using easily accessible resources like sacks, plant pots, and seeds, right within their homes or compounds. This eliminates the need for large farmlands and the insecurity of farming on uncertain lands, while improving on the availability of quality and nutritious food. This is an award-winning social impact project incubated in the Silicon Valley (San Francisco) and backed by TechWomen, and the International Institute of Education in the United States.
