We developed methods to forecast agro-systems impact, including carbon sequestration, multi-species production, cost-benefit analyses etc. at a different scale. To generate farm and landscape performance scenarios that are relevant to farmers or projects we apply a plot simulation instrument – the FarmTree® Tool. The FarmTree® Tool facilitates decision-makers see the quantified impact of different management practices on various land-use plots. The model uses (1) plot data, (2) climate data, (3) tree and crop definitions, including inputs and product prices, and (4) the management decisions farmers make, such as selected tree-crop mixes, and inputs. The FarmTree® Tool projects performance-indicators, such as ecological conditions (erosion, soil carbon, soil humidity, nutrients status), production, required labour days, financial costs and benefits, and environmental indicators (carbon, nutrients, erosion) for over up to 100 years. The FarmTree® Tool presents these indicators over time and they can be used for e.g. certification purposes such as Plan Vivo (for carbon sequestration), business case cost-benefit assessments, landscape-wide ex-ante impact assessments of projects or programmers.
