In more than 90% of the households, women and girls perform majority of the household work. Household work, however, is not considered as “real” work, let alone accounted and paid for. Unpaid labor around the globe is worth around a massive 10.8 trillion dollars annually.
This unpaid care responsibility often leads to women being dependent on their male counterparts. Deeply rooted in gendered social institutions, unpaid labor entrenches women into a cycle of discriminatory social norms that are difficult to break and further magnifies gender inequality.
At femploy, we decided to form an independent space for women to share their personal stories - of how unpaid care affects them and of course, other misogynistic practices, recognizing their efforts and struggles.
The question of dependence was a major factor, so as to have a more self-sufficient and aware next generation, we decided to provide a platform for young girls to learn and develop skills and bring them opportunities to work in. What this essentially does is that:
A) Women are encouraged to invest in skills.
B) They gain a sense of independence from a young age.
C) They understand the sexist social institutions that are normalized and hinder their growth.
D) They understand the economic value of this unpaid care.
