Fentanyl is perhaps the great risk to human lives that exists today. The problem is growing largely without resistance. Those involved have a reason to be, such as a lost loved one, a friend or neighbor, some life lost within their circle. What's left are a population of people who only understand the drugs we grew up with (crack, weed, cocaine, etc.). Fentanyl, it's nothing like what we're used to. And, addiction is not taking hold the same way either. Its victims are different, treatment must be different, beating it looks completely different.
We believe that awareness is very necessary to save lives. But, at the root of the problem is a stigma that exists around substance abuse. It's always existed. This idea that people make choices and there are just natural consequences to those actions and the end result is sometimes just a life lived under a bridge. The problem with breaking the stigma is that, like many things, there is some truth in it. Bad life decisions do factor in. Poor choices, do start this train in motion. But, that has always been short sided thinking. And, today, that truth is only one small piece of the puzzle.
Moving forward with that kind of thinking is going to cause mass casualties. It has to change. Many are dying the very first time they ingest fentanyl. Worse yet, many do not even realize they are taking fentanyl. They are being intentionally poisoned one-by-one.
