Final Mile is a global company – headquartered in New York – that has pioneered the integrated application of behavioural science, human-centred design and data science to fields such as public health, transportation safety, sanitation, commerce and financial services. Our Africa office, in Johannesburg, South Africa, was established in 2021 to expand our work on the continent.
We are behaviour architects™ – a team of design strategists, behavioural scientists and data analysts – who share the goal of deconstructing human decision-making and positively influencing behaviour.
Our track record in sub-Saharan Africa spans several years and predates the founding of our office on the continent. Much of this work has centred on public health and has used psycho-behavioural segmentation to throw light on:
✔️ How young women make decisions about protection against HIV infection.
✔️ What drives vaccine hesitancy in the African context.
✔️ The many factors in a woman’s life that support or hinder positive health choices.
We also hope to contribute to transportation safety on the continent by drawing on our programme in India where implementation of Final Mile’s recommendations led to a major decline in pedestrian deaths along the Mumbai rail network.
Human-centred design – involving structured consultation among populations for whom change strategies are intended – is at the heart of our work. We also have the advantage of access to advanced data analytics through Fractal Analytics, an international leader in artificial intelligence which acquired Final Mile in 2018.
