FishFrom has a ‘spade-ready’ 18-acre site on the west coast of Scotland to initially develop Phase 1, the construction of a small-scale Salmon RAS facility. It has obtained all the necessary lease agreements, planning permissions and discharge consents to produce salmon for the market from egg to 5kgs harvest size. The efficient production of successive batches from this facility will secure investment for a larger 3,600 tonne facility on the same site. The objective is to develop more large scale RAS farms in the UK and overseas.
FishFrom will manage:
• the development of the existing site infrastructure and services into an onshore salmon farm
• the selection of ova from family breeding programmes to produce the on-growing salmon stocks
• the incubation and all freshwater stages of the fish through to smolt
• the subsequent stocking of smolt into the farm’s seawater tanks
• the production, growth, health and welfare of the salmon to market size
• the feed and feed trials to promote growth, welfare, fish flavour and reduce waste
• the continual measurement of all life support systems ensuring highest standards of welfare and product quality are delivered
• the valorisation of waste streams by processing uneaten feed and faeces and creating additional revenue as fertiliser or AD feedstock products
• the efficient harvesting of the fish and delivery to market
• reusable packaging and chilling media to reduce wastage and energy consumption
FishFrom will develop from production derived data, useful tools, systems and equipment to promote food safety and security. It will also create a circular economy with low environmental impact and reduce energy use for land-based salmon aquaculture.
