Flexpansion Ltd. was founded in 2008 by Dr Tim Willis, to commercialise his PhD research in Informatics at Edinburgh University, and now has a lean, smart team including 3 PhDs plus business and finance backgrounds. The Flexpansion app for Android (and soon other platforms) expands *any* reasonable abbreviation into full. No memorisation or prior training are needed - just choose shorthands as you go. The founder's PhD focused on building an algorithm for expanding abbreviations back into full. It was aimed at users with motor disabilities but he also realised the wider application - touchscreens everywhere. We are exploring applications in disability communication too.
