As a multidisciplinairy projectteam Joke, Ilse, Gustav, Nick, Ana and Huub will head to Myanmar to explore and implement temporary and permanent flood protections in flood prone areas in the Ayeyarwady delta. The country of Myanmar is a typically developing country, both economically and socially. With these developments comes the urge to protect people and properties. For Myanmar this is a great challenge, as Myanmar is very vulnerable to floods. Especially in the lower Ayeyarwady delta water related problems are likely to occur, such as coastal squeeze and the increase of flood risk due to urbanization near the rivers and coasts. This project will mainly focus on the flood related problems. The landscape of Myanmar has a dynamic active climate. It has to cope with major floods due to monsoons and is frequently affected by cyclones. Rivers flow unhindered through the country and sea level rise might be a future problem as well. The current measures taken to prevent damage due to these problems are inadequate or even missing.
